Rich tribute paid to ten martyred intellectuals in Rangpur


The martyrdom day of ten renowned intellectuals of Rangpur city was observed in a befitting manner here through paying rich tribute to them at ‘Dakhiganj Shwashan Baddhyabhumi Smriti Soudha’ here on Friday afternoon.Muktijuddher Smriti Sangrakkhshan Parishad (MSSP) placed wreaths at the ‘Dakhiganj Shwashan Baddhyabhumi’ and organised a memorial discussion in observance of the day commonly known as ‘Dakhiganj Shwashan Baddhyabhumi Dibash.’After placing wreaths, language movement veteran and organiser of the War of Liberation Mir Anisul Haque Payara attended the discussion as the chief guest with President of MSSP Advocate Rothish Chandra Bhowmick Babu Sona in the chair.Former General Secretary of district CPB Comrade Chandan Ghosh,educationist Banamali Paul, President of Mahiganj Press Club Bablu nag, Dr Asima Bhowmick, District unit Convener of ‘Projanmo 71’ Debdas Ghosh Debu and martyred family member Meher Halder Khokan addressed as special guests.Member of the district BSD (Marxist) Comrade Polash Kanti Nag, cultural personalities Hassan Ali and Imam Hossain, social workers Alok Nath, Swapan Roy, Samoresh Das Sagar and Parul Das also spoke.
Member-secretary of the district unit of MSSP Razzaqul Islam Razzaque moderated the discussion predicated by members of the martyred intellectuals’families and a large number of people from all walks in the society.Besides, members and relatives of the 10 martyred intellectuals’ families chalked out programmes including placing wreaths at ‘Dakhiganj Shwashan Baddhyabhumi Smriti Soudha’ and offering special prayers in observance of the day.
The speakers said the Pakistani demons with local collaborators, Razakars,Al-badars and Beharis caught 11 brilliant Bangalees from the city on March 27 in 1971 and took them to Rangpur cantonment, where they were put under barbaric torture.Later at night on April 3 during the War of Liberation in 1971, the Pakistani blood-hungry soldiers and their local collaborators took them to Dakhiganj Shwashan area near the city and gunned them down.By the grace of the Almighty, one of them, Awami League leader Dr Dinesh Chandra Bhowmick alias Mantu Daktar, who received eight bullets, escaped the death during the indiscriminate firing. He later joined the Freedom Fighters after treatments in India.The martyrs intellectuals are: Advocate Mahfuz Ali Zorjes, Khitish Halder,Ehsanul Haque Dulal, Rafiqul Islam Rafique, Dhirendranath Shanti Chaki, Durga Das Adhikari, Gopal Chandra, Tofazzal Hossain Moharram, Uttam Kumar Adhikari and Pagla Darbesh.The speakers demanded immediate completion of the war crimes trial to pay due respect to the martyred intellectuals and independence-seeker innocent Bangalees during the War of Liberation. -BSS, Rangpur
