Dhaka – Expressing deep concern over the rising incidents of rape in the country, different women and child rights organisations on Wednesday urged the government to take effective steps to prevent the ongoing violence against women and children.They made the call at a protest meeting organised by Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF) in collaboration with some other rights organizations at the central Shahid Minar in the city.
Executive Director of MSF Shahin Anam said violence against the women and children has now reached an intolerable level due to culture of impunity.
She urged the government to ensure safety of women and children through taking effective steps to end violence against them and find out the reasons behind the rising incidents of rape.
Speakers also expressed their concern and shock over the ‘silence of the civil society’ even after the rape of child with disability.
They also stressed the need for coordinated efforts of social forces to stop violence against women and children.Ninety nine incidents of child rape took place in last three months and 20 of the victims were killed, they said
Representatives of 22 human, women and child rights bodies, including Nari Pokkho, Actionaid, Bangladesh Child Rights Forum, participated in the protest programme.UNB
