The Statistic department of Rajshahi University (RU) observed the World Statistic Day 2015 on the campus on Saturday with much enthusiasm amid various programme including singing national anthem, hoisting national flag and department flag and flag of national alumni association and releasing festoons and baloons.
The event was inaugurated by university VC Professor Muhammad Mizanuddin by releasing baloons and festoons in front of 3rd science building at 9am.
Later, the teachers, students and stuff of the Statistic department brought out a welcome procession that paraded the main streets on the campus.
Discussion meeting and video shows on statistics research were also held on the day with the slogan better data, better lives at 11.00am
Chairman of the department Professor Dr. Md. Riptar Hossain presided over the function while VC Professor Muhammad Mizanuddin addressed the programme as Chief guest. Pro-Vc Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan, and director general of Bureau of Statistic and also additional secretary of the secretariat Md. Abdul Wazed, general secretary of RU alumni association Md. Ayub Ali Khan were present.
The Convener of the World Statistics Day observation Professor Md. Aminul Haque delivered welcome speech.
Chief guest said the Statistics is being used inclusively in every part of the education including social science, natural science. Development of the country is possible if we properly use data and information in plan framing, research and other relevant areas, he added.
The day is celebrated once every five years. The day was observed on 20 Octeber elsewhere. RU observed this day on October 31 as the university was on vacation for the Duraga Puja. – RU Correspondent
