A female teacher of Rajshahi University’s Journalism department, Akter Jahan Jolly, was found dead at her university residence on the campus on Friday afternoon.Police recovered the body of Jolly, 45, an associate professor of the department, from room No 303 of Jubery Bhaban, a teachers’ residential block. She used to live at the house alone.
The law enforcers also recovered a suicide note from the room.
Associate Prof Satil Siraj, a teacher of the department, said Jolly’s son informed them that he could not reach her mother over her mobile phone.
Later, some teachers of the department went to the residential block in the afternoon and found the door of her room locked from inside.
As they did not get any response even after repeated calls, the teachers informed the RU proctor and the police about it.
The law enforcers entered the teacher’s residence around 5 pm breaking open the door only to see her lying unconscious on her bed.
They took her to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where doctors declared her dead.
Meanwhile, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner Shafiqul Islam said they found a suicide note after searching Jolly’s room. “It seemed to us the note was written by herself as we matched the writing with that of her diary.”
The suicide note reads, “No one is responsible for my death. I killed myself due to physical and mental stress.”
Jolly also called for not giving her son under his father’s custody.
Campus sources said Jolly got married with Tanveer Ahmad, also an associate professor of the same department, before joining the university as a lecturer in 1999. Tanveer joined the university in 1995.
They, however, got separated in 2012.
Following their divorce, Jolly had been living at Jubery Bhaban as a single mother with her school-going son Sowad.
Tanveer, however, married a student, Soma Dev, in 2015 when he was the chairman of the department.
Jolly’s son has been living with her parents in Dhaka for the last few months as he got admitted to an English medium school there.
Her colleagues said Jolly was scheduled to leave Rajshahi for Dhaka on Friday as the eid vacation began at the university on Wednesday.
They said her mortal remains have been kept at the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital’s mortuary.
Jolly’s colleague M Mamun Abdul Kaioum said they found her inside a raised curtain in her bed while the ceiling fan was switched on.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid expressed deep shock at the death of the RU teacher.
In a condolence message, he prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed his deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
