A leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) at Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) has gone missing.Family members of Saifuzzaman Sohag, a fourth year mechanical engineering students at RUET, was picked up from his house at Terokhadia Paschimparha in the city’s Rajparha by some persons who claimed they were from the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).Sohag is the information and research secretary of the BCL’s RUET unit.But RAB denies any raid to nab Sohag and police says they have no knowledge of his detention.Sohag’s father Akkas Uz Zaman said about 15 people turned up at their residence around 3am on Thursday and asked for opening the gate.’We were reluctant to open the gate at that hour, but they forced us to do so. They rushed to the second floor room of my son, examined his laptop and camera and then carried him away forcibly,” he said.”All the while, a few of them kept us surrounded and away from our son. When we asked where was he carried away, we were told to check with the local police station next day,” he also said.
He said Sohag’s wife, a medical student in Dhaka, turned up and complained that her ornaments have gone missing from the room.Akkas Uz Zaman said that he turned up at the Rajparha Police Station on Thursday and was told that Sohag was not in their custody.”I have also checked with the local RAB unit and they say they did not launch any raid on Wednesday night to nab Sohag,” he added.Sohag’s father-in-law Sheikh Rezaur Rahman Dulal, a director of the Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, announced Sohag’s mysterious disappearance before the media on Friday morning.His mother Shirin Zaman told bdnews24.com that those who entered their house saying they were from the RAB had questioned his son about a girl classmate of his.”But we could not figure out the details of the conversation,” she said.RUET’s BCL General Secretary Touhidur Rahman Himel said they have heard about Sohag’s disappearance.
“We have asked Chhatra League activists to find out what happened. To the best of my knowledge, Sohag did not have problems with anyone.”RUET Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Rafiqul Alam Beg, however, said he had not heard of Sohag’s disappearance.Sohag’s father has filed a general diary at Rajparha Police Station over his son’s disappearance.”We are trying to trace Sohag but have not been successful so far. But we are trying,” Rajparha police OC Mahmudur Rahman said.RAB-5’s Deputy Commander Maj ‘Salam’ told that they had not conducted any raid to nab Sohag.“We have kept Sohag’s number are trying to track it down,” he said.Akkas Uz Zaman said: “We are law abiding citizens. If our boy has done anything unlawful, he should be produced in court and tried.”
