SAFF U-18: Bangladesh to play hosts Bhutan Wednesday


Dhaka – Bangladesh Under-18 football team will play their last and crucial match of the five-nation SAFF U-18 Championship against hosts Bhutan on Wednesday at Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu with a hope to clinch the title.The match will kick off at 4pm local time.Two other title contenders – India and Nepal — will meet each other in the last match, also on Wednesday at 7 pm at the same venue.After Monday’s 3rd round matches, four teams — India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan — secured six points each from three matches to stay in the title race while the Maldives were eliminated from the meet losing all the four matches.On Monday, high-flying Bangladesh suffered the first defeat in their 3rd match making uncertain their title mission losing to Nepal by 1-2 goals after making 1-1 in the first half while India also stayed in the title race beating the Maldives by 2-1 goals on the day.
Coming from 0-3 goals behind, Bangladesh made a flying start in the tournament beating their giant neighbour India by 4-3 goals scoring all the four goals in row in the 2nd half and consolidated their position further beating all-loser the Maldives by 2-0 goals in the 2nd match.Ahead of the match against Bhutan, Head Coach of Bangladesh team Mahbubur Rahman Roxy said, “We’re very unfortunate yesterday (Monday). However, we aren’t thinking about yesterday’s match. We have still the opportunity to be the champions and so we must beat Bhutan in the last match.”He also sought blessings and support for the team who are trying hard to bring the championship for the country.Captain of Bangladesh team Tutul Hossen Badsha said, “We’re very unfortunate to lose the match against Nepal missing a lot of easy chances. The red card of Bishwanath hurt us and put us into pressure. We don’t want to make any further mistake against Bhutan. We want victory against Bhutan because still we have the chance to become champions.”
On completion of the league basis matches, the top team of the five-nation meet will be the champions.Points Table after 3rd round matches on Monday:
