Shringla tells Khaleda extremism obstacle to region’s uplift


Indian High Commissioner Harsh Vardhan Shringla on Tuesday told BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia that terrorism and extremism are major impediments to peace and development in the region.During a courtesy call on the former premier at her Gulshan political office last night the newly appointed Indian envoy also conveyed her that India stands firmly with Bangladesh in its fight against terrorism.
“India condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and there can be no justification for senseless acts of violence,” says a press release issued by Indian High Commission following the call on of Harsh Vardhan.
During the hour long meeting began at 8:05pm, he Indian High Commissioner informed the BNP chairperson of recent developments in bilateral cooperation.
He conveyed that India is fully committed to partner Bangladesh in its economic development with a pragmatic and mature approach based on sovereignty, equality, friendship, trust and understanding for the mutual benefit of peoples of both the countries and collective prosperity of the region.
The High Commissioner highlighted the focus on development of infrastructure and improving connectivity to facilitate bilateral trade and economic ties, with, more people-to-people contacts, said the release.
Meanwhile, briefing reporters BNP chairperson’s adviser Sabihuddin Ahmed said it was an courtesy call of the Indian High Commissioner.
“All gamut of the bilateral relations and mutual interests of the two countries came in the discussion,” he told a questioner.
He said it was first call on of Harsh Vardhan with Khaleda Zia after he appointed he was appointed Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh.
Asked whether the recent militant attack in Bangladesh was discussed during the meeting, he parried the answer.
The Indian High Commissioner accompanied by Deputy High Commissioner Dr Adarsh Swaika and other senior officials of the High Commission while BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and standing committee ember Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, among others, were present on the occasion. – Staff Reporter
