Presidency University, Kolkata has presented Indian actor Soumitra Chatterjee with honorary Doctor of Letters (D Litt) for outstanding contributions to Indian cinema.Soumitra accepted the honour from the Vice-Chancellor Anuradha Lohia on Tuesday, at the university convocation held at Nandan’s auditorium 3.
After receiving the award Soumitra said, “If my acting was able to make at least one person happy, or helped at least one person to live, then that in itself is the biggest achievement of my art.
“I did not have the chance to study at Presidency, but I have always looked at it from afar. My grandfather studied in this university. I have observed since childhood that the best students always enroll at Presidency.”
The 83 year old actor previously received Padma Bhusan and Dadasaheb Phalke Award from the Indian government. He has also received Legion of Honour and Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the government of France.

His acting career, that includes film and stage productions, spans six decades and he has worked with almost every renowned director of India. Some of the directors he has worked with are Tapan Sinha, Tarun Majumdar, Aparna Senand Rituparno Ghosh.
