KHULNA – A violent storm ripped through the Khulna city and district last night, damaging several thousand thatched and tin-shed houses, uprooting a huge number of trees and destroying standing Boro paddy on thousands of acres of land.Electricity in the city and district was cut off for nearly 20 hours disrupting normal life and rotting huge quantities of fish and other foods in refrigerators.The storm shattered the International Trade Fair of Khulna (KITF) leaving over 50 people injured.
The entire city was without electricity last night causing immense sufferings to patients at public and private hospitals and to HSC examinees.Thousands of poor people took shelter at shelter centers in upazilas of the district, according to the UNOs.Over 40 percent full-grown paddy plants in most of the fields of nine upazilas and the city fell on the ground due to the storm. Many farmers are now cutting immature paddy plants, fearing further calamities.Several hundred trees and electric poles were also uprooted during the storm. Power supply in most of the affected areas could not be restored till this evening.Acting Mayor of Khulna city Anisur Rahman Biswas said the Khulna City Corporation (KCC) employees started clearing the streets of fallen trees. Deputy Commissioner of Khulna Nazmul Hassan said the storm accompanied by heavy rain hit the city and villages of the southern district around 7.45 pm and lasted for an hour.He said the district administration has already taken initiatives to rehabilitate the affected people and restore electricity supply.(BSS)
