Risha killing: Sudents call countrywide human chain

Students of Willes Little Flower School and College in the capital on Monday called for forming a one-hour human chain in all educational institutions across the country on Wednesday demanding the arrest of their fellow Suraiya Akhter Risha’s killer.“We’re urging all educational institutions to form a one-hour human chain from 12 pm to 1 pm in front of their respective institutions on August 31,” Muntasir Mahmud, a student of the institution and spokesman of the movement demanding justice for Risha, said during a demonstration at Kakrail in the city.
Earlier, the students blocked Kakrail road protesting the killing of the schoolgirl, halting vehicular movement on Malibagh, Shantinagar, Bijoynagar and Nayapaltan roads in the morning.
The protesting students took position on the road around 11 am and blocked it in front of the school, said witnesses.
They chanted slogans – ‘We want justice… we want trial of Risha’s killer’.
Following the road blockade, huge traffic congestion was created in Malibagh, Shantinagar and Kakrail areas.
At one stage, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid visited the educational institution when he said, “I want the killer to be arrested and brought to justice.”
The traffic returned to normalcy around 2:15 pm after the students postponed their demonstration on police assurance of arresting the killer by 48 hours.
Maruf Hossain Sordar, deputy commissioner (Ramna Division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said they will be able to arrest the killer by the deadline.
Suraiya Akhter Risha, 14, daughter of Md Ramzan Ali of Bangshal of old Dhaka and an eighth grader of Willes Little Flower School and College, was stabbed by a stalker in front of her educational institution on August 24.
She died of her wounds at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Sunday morning.
