Tourism minister urges researchers to focus on folk culture


Civil Aviation & Tourism Minster Rashed Khan Menon has urged folk-researchers of the country to come forward and focus on the folklore. Folks will be pulled from the clutches of the market economy. Because of the Bengali nationalism is closely linked to the folk culture.
The minister said, Folklore is integral to everyday life which has been incorporated in both literature and mass media. Folk tradition and culture is however faced with extinction in the black hole of globalisation and market economy. We lack a clear idea about the history and tradition of the folk culture, he said. Mr. Menon maade the call while addressing a discussion meeting at the inaugural session of two-days long “International Folklore Conference & Alumni Reunion” as the chief guest on Friday afternoon at the Kazi Nazrul Islam auditorium organised by Folklore Department of Rajshahi University (RU).
The Tourism Minister again said, foreigners doing research on folk culture in this country. But the country`s researchers are not giving much importance to the area. So there is a need to engage new students-researchers in the study of folk culture. Folklore department of different public universities in the country must have an important role to play on thIs regard.
Dr. Varun Kumar Chakraborty, professor emeritus of Rabindra Bharati University, India presented the key paper while RU vice chancellor Prof. Muhammed Mizan Uddin presided over the discussion meeting.
Former RU VC Prof. Abdul Khaleq, local MP Fazle Hossain Badsha, Pro-VC of Uttara University Prof. Yasmeen Ara Lekha and Japan’s humanist writer & Lalon-researcher Naomi Watanabe also addressed the ceremony.
Folklore department head Prof. Mobaraka Siddika made her welcome speech.
Meanwhile, a great rally participating with the former-present teachers-students-delegates, open seminar, exhibition and folk fair held in the two days long “Int`l Folklore Conference & Alumni Reunion” program that ended Saturday at 11.00am. – RU Correspondent
