The Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested two suspected Islamic Militants, including the alleged commander of a newly formed Islamic ‘jihadi group,’ from Mohammadpur area in the city on Wednesday.
Three foreign made pistols, 16 roubd bullets and explosives were reportedly recovered from their possession.
The arrested suspects are Md Asaduzzaman alias Milon alias Milo alias Abdullah alias Anik, alleged commander of newly formed jihadi group ‘ Bangladesh Jihadi Group” and Firoz Md Tamal, a major financer of the jihadi group. Briefing reporters at DMP media centre on Thursday, Joint Commissioner (DB) Monirul Islam said acting on a tip-off, a special DB team conducted a raid at Mohammadia housing of Mohammadpur at about 5:00 pm and arrested the two militants along with  three foreign made pistols, 16 round bullets and explosives.
Monirul Islam said earlier on June 7, the detectives arrested nine militants including spiritual leader Maulana Nurullah Kashemi, from Banasree and Sutrapur areas. Based on thier information, the detectives arrested two chemical suppliers and one lab assistant of Dhaka University on charge of sale chemicals to the militant group, he said.
After interrogating the arrested militant suspects, DB arrested the duo from Mohammadia housing area on Wednesday.
The Joint Commissioner (DB) said during preliminary interrogation, the arrested alleged militant commander and financer revealed that they used to provide firearms and Jihadee trainings for militants at a ‘char’ of Padma river as well as frontiers of North Bengale.
They had a plan to send those trained militants to Syria and Afganistan for establishing jihad. Later, the had plan to conduct subversive activities in the country in the name of establishing ‘Khelafat’, the Joint Commissioner (DB) said.
Separate cases were filed with Mohammadpur police station in connection with the incident. – News Desk
