Two dead in Teknaf gunfight


Two people have been killed at Teknaf’s Hnila Union in a gunfight between assailants and police. The battle at Hnila’s Rongikhali area that began at 12am continued on and off until 4pm Thursday. Police and the BGB later brought the situation under control.

Those killed are Syedul Amin, 35, and Shahjalal, 25, said Pranab Chakma a police officer on duty at the Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.

They two men, who suffered bullet wounds, were arrested and admitted to the hospital, said Teknaf Police OC Mohammad Forhad.

“They died under treatment,” said the OC.

Both men were marked bandits with 12 cases against Syedul and 20 against Shahjalal.

A police officer and two Ansar members were injured among several others, said Teknaf Police OC (investigation) Didarul Ferdous.

Hiron Kumar Deb, a policeman, was admitted to Cox’s Bazar Sadar with grave injuries. The Ansar were being treated at the Teknaf Hospital.

Two locally made guns and a machete were recovered from the site, he said.

Police are trying to find the other assailants. –
