Two defence bills passed in JS

Parliament on Tuesday unanimously passed two bills -–’Defence Services (Amendment to some laws) Bill, 2016′ and ‘Defence Services (Supreme Command) Bill, 2016’—for continuation of effectiveness of the provisions made under two ordinances, promulgated during military rule, for the sake of public interest.Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq, who was entrusted with the charge of the Defence Ministry related business in the House on Tuesday, piloted the two bills, which were passed by voice votes.
The Defence Services Laws Amendment Ordinance, 1978 and the Defence Services (Supreme Command) Ordinance, 1979 lost effectiveness after the 15th amendment to the Constitution 2011.
In the objectives of the bills, it was stated that enactment of new laws are needed for keeping continuation of effectiveness of the provisions made under the ordinances for the sake of public interest.
The Defence Services (Amendment to some laws) Bill, 2016 proposed some changes to Navy (Extension of Service) Act 1950, Army and Air Force Reserve Act 1952, Air Force (Extension of Service) Act 1952, Air Force Act 1953, Navy Ordinance 1961 for making those time-befitting.
The bill is an amended form of the Defence Services Laws Amendment Ordinance, 1978.
Meanwhile, ‘Defence Services (Supreme Command) Bill, 2016′ stated that the President of the republic will be the supreme commander of defence services. The President will exercise his supreme authority through all chiefs or heads of defence services.
The bill is an amended version of the Defence Services (Supreme Command) Ordinance, 1979.
