Verdict against Aleem questionable: Abbas

Though his party is silent over the judgment, BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas on Wednesday said all the verdicts of the tribunals, including the one against former BNP minister Abdul Alim, are questionable.   “We’ve been saying that BNP is in favour of trial of war crimes, but it has to be transparent, impartial and of international standard… the trials which are being held are questionable. People have various questions about the trials,” he said.   The BNP policymaker made the remarks as reporters sought his comment about the verdict against Alim while he emerging after attending a discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB).   Earlier in the day, International Crime Tribunal-2 awarded Abdul Alim, a Cabinet member of slain President and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, jail unto death for crimes against humanity, including genocide, murder and deportation during the 1971 Liberation War.   It was the second verdict of the tribunals against any BNP leader as the ICT-1 earlier on Oct 1 gave death sentence to BNP standing committee member Salauddin Quader Chowdhury.   Though BNP reacted to the verdict against Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, the party is maintaining silence after the punishment against Alim.   Sought reaction after the verdict against Alim, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said they have no instant reaction to the verdict.   Abbas attended a discussion of Duet ex-Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal association at the IEB auditorium.   Talking to reporters after the programme, the BNP leader alleged that the ruling party is trying war criminals of other parties keeping such war criminals in their own party out of the trial process.   He also said the present trial process is not appropriate as it failed to meet the international standard.   “BNP will take steps for proper and impartial trial of war criminals maintaining international standard if it comes to power,” he added. – UNB
