President Abdul Hamid on Thursday urged all to exercise democratic rules and norms and work together for the march forward of democracy. “Our responsibility will be to expedite the advancement of democracy and make it more meaningful by exercising democratic rules and norms,” he said adding that all need to work together for the welfare of the country. The President was addressing a mass reception organised at Nikli High School ground in honour of him as the country’s celebrated son hails from the district. President’s wife Rashida Khanom was also present. The President said having differences of opinion among political parties in a democratic country is quite natural. The key to flourishing democracy is to show tolerance to different opinions, mutual respect as well as to strengthen the democratic institutions. Observing that he was elected President of the country at the fag end of the present government’s tenure, Abdul Hamid sought blessings of all, saying: “Pray for me so that I can perform my duties and responsibilities bestowed upon me properly with dignity. I pray to the Almighty so that I can uphold your dignity.” Making a flashback, the President said, “Appearing before you today, many things of the past are crossing through my mind. You probably know that I was a student of Nikli High School. At one stage of my study in Bhairab School, my father brought me to Nikli and got me admitted here. Later, I fall in love with the school getting love and affection from the respected teachers.” The President said, “Though I was born in the haor area but now I am the President of the whole country. All the people of the country are equal to me… and I always try to maintain equality and neutrality.” He went on: “As President my activities are now in strict discipline. It’s not possible for me to meet anyone anytime as in the past even if I wish to. Even then I’ll advise to communicate with me if anyone needs to meet me. I will try to meet you managing time to hear you. My door is always open for you all.” President’s son Rezwan Ahmed, MP Toufiq and Afzal Hossain, MP among others, spoke at the function held at chairman of the mass reception celebration committee Karar Gias Uddin Ahmed in the chair. Earlier, the President visited Muktijoddha Abdul Haque College and Haji Tayeb Uddin High School at Mithamoin upazila in the district. – UNB
