Workers Party of Bangladesh, an ally of Awami League led grand alliance, on Tuesday unveiled its manifesto, pledging for establishing a non-communal and democratic Bangladesh.  The Workers Party announced its 24-point manifesto at a press conference at Asad auditorium at its central office in the city, just four days ahead of the January 5 general elections.The main opposition BNP and its allies are boycotting the polls and launching movement to resist the government move. The BNP led 18-party opposition alliance demanded a non-partisan government for holding a free and fair poll.
In his introductory speech, WP president and Minister for Post and Telecommunications of the interim government Rashed Khan Menon said the election was going to be held in an adverse condition as the BNP led alliance set to boycott it.
He however, said that the government has to hold the elections to meet the obligation of the constitution.
Menon said the election would be held accordingly ignoring the obstacles of the opposition parties.
A total of 18 WP candidates are contesting the elections. Of them, four candidates are taking part in the elections as candidates of the alliance with the Awami League’s symbol ‘boat’ and 14-candidates are taking part with the party symbol ‘hammer.’
Menon said that ways still could be unearthed if the opposition would announce to join the elections.
“If the opposition party declares that they will take part in the elections, the government can think for rearranging the polls,” he added.
WP secretary general Anisur Rahman Mollick announced the election pledges of the party.
The election pledges include achieving of food security, reducing prices of the essential commodities, eradication of poverty, controlling communalism and militancy, agricultural reforms, land reform, developments of industry, workers, controlling imperialist aggressions, controlling corruptions, extortions and strengthening the Election Commission for holding the elections under constitution.
Politburo members of the party Safiuddin Ahmed, Quamrul Ahsan, Nur Ahmed Bakul, central leaders Enamul Haque Emran and Dipankar Saha Dipu, among others, also attended the press conference. – Staff Reporter
