A day-long workshop jointly organised by Faridpur Pourashava and Practical Action, Bangladesh(PAB) on ‘Fecal Sludge Management and Regulatory Framework’ initiated by the Local Government Ministry was held yesterday(Monday)at the Pourashava conference room.In the multi-media presentation PAB personnel Abdullah Al Mamun displayed the present situation of sludge management of Faridpur Pourashava inhabited by about more than one lakh people.He disclosed that only ten percent of fecal sludge of the houses are safely disposed while the rest ninety percent are disposed unsafely which somehow again returns back in the environment causing pollution and health hazards.  Pourashava Mayor Sheikh Mahatab Ali Methu who chaired the seminar disclosed that a scientific and modern treatment plant for fecal sludge management will be constructed soon at Char Adampur area with the financial assistance of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation of USA where the technical assistance will be provided by PAB. In the multi-media presentation PAB personnel showed the various stages of sludge management right from collection, transportation and disposal with the design of the plant. He further disclosed that the proposed plant will contain 35 cubic meters to be constructed at an estimated cost of Taka 1, 30,000.CEO of Pourashava Md. Shahjahan Mia said that the required land for the proposed plant has already been procured at Char Adampur, about four kilometers north of this town. He said land development work is going there. This workshop is a part of national fecal sludge management policy to be formulated by the Government soon.Compost fertilizer will be produced from the sludge in this plant, the CEO added. He further said that the proposed sludge will cover only three wards out of nine wards initially which will be expanded later on the outcome of performance.PAB Personnel Rafiul Islam said that this proposed sludge management from collection to disposal will be handed over to the sweepers by forming associations like present kitchen wastes disposal system now prevailing in this pourashava yielding good results.Mayor Methu sought the cooperation of the citizens for successful implementation of the proposed treatment plant to make this growing town healthier and safe.The seminar was attended by senior citizens, social activists,environment officials, journalists, and officials of pourashava.Among others BSS Correspondent Prof Md. Shahjahan, former FCCI president and social activist Awlad Hossain Babor, Ngo activist Asma Akhtar Mukta and PAB coordinator Anwoar Hossain took part in the deliberation.BSS, Faridpur
