A bicyclist was killed in Golapganj upazila of Sylhet after being hit by a speeding truck on Thursday night, police said.

The deceased, Kabir Ahmed, 45, was a resident of Hilalpur village in Fulbari Union of the upazila and worked as a mason.

The accident occurred around 9:30pm in the Naya Masjid area on the Sylhet–Zakiganj road in Fulbari Union, said Golapganj Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Ariful Islam.

According to eyewitnesses, Kabir Ahmed was returning home from Hetimganj Bazar by bicycle when a speeding truck hit him from behind near the mosque, leaving him dead on the spot.

Following the accident, a two-kilometre tailback was created on both sides of the road. Locals alleged that police did not arrive at the scene for nearly two hours, which sparked anger among residents.

Later, when police reached the spot, an agitated crowd chased them, forcing them to take shelter in a nearby house.

Army personnel later arrived and brought the situation under control. They assisted in recovering the body and restoring traffic movement on the Sylhet–Zakiganj road, reports UNB.
