3 killed in head-on collision between bus-pickup in Habiganj

Three people were killed and three others were seriously injured in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a pickup van in Nabiganj upazila of the district on Monday.


The accident occurred on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Rokonpur area under Paniumda union of the upazila.

The deceased were identified as Mashud Ahmed, 40, son of Sufi Mia of Karkhana village in Dighalbak union, Abul Kashem, 50, son of Moyna Mia of Inatganj South village and and Moyna Mia, 30, an employee of Fahim Vegetable Store at Inatganj Bazar.

According to police and local sources, several vegetable traders and employees from Inatganj Bazar were travelling by pickup van to Digambar Bazar in Bahubal upazila to purchase vegetables and other produce.

When the pickup reached the Rokonpur area, it collided head-on with a passenger bus of Lucky Paribahan coming from the opposite direction.
Mashud Ahmed died on the spot.

Locals rescued four critically injured people, including the pickup driver, and sent them to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for treatment. Abul Kashem and Moyna Mia died while undergoing treatment at 2.00pm, reports BSS.

Mohammad Jasim Uddin, sub-inspector of Sherpur Highway Police Station, confirmed the accident, saying one person died at the scene while two others later succumbed to their injuries at the hospital in Sylhet.
