At least two people died while a man remained missing after a fire broke out at the engine room of an oil-laden cargo of Meghna depot on Kirtonkhola river near Barishal Muktijoddha Park on Thursday afternoon.

An official at the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters said the fire originated inside the engine room of the cargo ship at around 4:45 pm.

A fire-fighting unit—Agnighatok--from Barishal Fire Station rushed to the scene and doused the flame.

Two units were also kept on standby to help douse the fire, said Shahjahan Sikder, DAD of the fire service’s media cell.

The fire fighters recovered two bodies, while two others were rescued with the help of local people, he said, adding that one person was still missing.
