Cop among two killed as bike hits tree in Netrakona

Netrakona, Feb 17 – A joy ride turned tragic for three friends, one of them a police officer, on Wednesday evening, as their bike crashed into a tree in Netrakona, a northeastern district of Bangladesh, killing two of them on the spot.

The accident occurred on Kalmakanda-Lengura Road in the Phulbaria area of the district's Kalmakanda upazila around 4pm.

The deceased were identified as Zahirul Islam Sabuj, 46, an assistant sub-inspector, and Insan Uddin, 30, both residents of Nakla upazila in Sherpur district. The other rider -- 

Sumon Mahmud, 23 -- sustained injuries in the accident.

Akbar Ali Munshi, superintendent of Netrakona Police, told UNB that the three friends were riding the bike home from the border area of Lengura, where the Mausoleum of Seven Martyrs is located, when it crashed into the roadside tree at a high speed.

The impact of the crash was such that the two died on the spot. "Sumon is being treated at Durgapur Upazila Health Complex," he added. - UNB
