Eleven people, including five 17-year-old students and a two-year-old child, were killed when a bus carrying 57 people crashed off a cliff in northern Peru, authorities reported Sunday. The accident occurred on Saturday when the bus, en route from Piura to the San Martin region, collided head-on with a van before plunging into the ravine.

Among the dead, there were schoolchildren, teachers, and parents on a class trip. Local officials said 18 others were injured in the crash, which took place in the province of Moyobamba.

Peru has a troubling history of traffic accidents, with over 3,100 deaths reported in 2023 alone, according to the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
