February saw a slight decrease in road accidents compared to January, with 596 accidents recorded across Bangladesh, resulting in 578 fatalities. This figure is only marginally lower than January’s toll of 608 deaths from 621 accidents. The difference is primarily attributed to February’s shorter month, which lasted three days fewer than January.

In addition to the fatalities, at least 1,327 people sustained injuries in February’s accidents. Among the deceased, 73 were women and 87 were children, underscoring the widespread impact of road safety issues.

These findings were detailed in a report by the non-governmental organization, Road Safety Foundation, presented on Saturday, March 8.

The report draws on data from nine national newspapers, seven online news outlets, various electronic media sources, and the foundation’s own records. It highlights that motorcycle accidents were the leading cause of death, with 241 motorcycle-related incidents claiming 227 lives. These accidents accounted for 39.27% of all fatalities in February, and motorcycles were involved in 40.43% of the month’s total accidents.

Additionally, pedestrians suffered greatly, with 114 fatalities, making up 19.72% of the total deaths. Drivers and their assistants accounted for 14.18% of the fatalities, with 82 losing their lives.
