A bailey bridge collapsed due to overload of a coal-laden truck, disrupting regional road communication in Indurkandi upazila of Pirojpur early Friday.

Locals said that the bridge collapsed at around 4am while the truck carrying 27 tonnes of coal was crossing over a canal in the Chandipur union of the upazila.

Due to the collapse, vehicular movement remained suspended causing difficulties for thousands of pedestrians traveling from Indurkani and Kolaron Sannyasi to Morrelganj regional road.

Though vehicles over five tonnes are prohibited from passing, an overloaded coal truck broke the bridge while crossing, as it was unable to bear the weight, they said.

Tanveer Ahmed, executive engineer of Pirojpur Road and Transport, said on information a team was sent to the scene and necessary measures will be taken later, reports UNB.
