Two motorcycle riders were killed after being hit by a pickup van on the Alamdanga-Kushtia regional road in Chuadanga district, police said.

The tragic accident occurred around 9:30 pm Thursday in the Naodapara area of Alamdanga upazila.

The deceased were identified as Riyad (13), son of Mahmudul Hasan Chanchal, chairman of Belgachi Union Parishad, and Md. Zahurul Islam Palash (35), a resident of Faridpur village in Alamdanga and an employee of the chairman’s farm.

According to police and eyewitness accounts, Riyad and Palash were returning home in Alamdanga from Kushtia town after shopping. As they reached Naodapara, a speeding pickup van struck their motorcycle from behind, causing both to be thrown off and sustain serious injuries.

Despite prompt rescue efforts by locals to take them to hospital, Riyad died on the spot, while Palash succumbed en route to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital, reports UNB.

Masudur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Alamdanga Police Station, said that the pickup van had been seized, but the driver fled the scene immediately after the accident.

"Efforts are on to apprehend the suspect," said the OC.

The bodies were sent to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsies, and police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.
