A Bangladesh Air Force F-7 fighter jet crashed in the Diabari area of Uttara, Dhaka, around 1:30pm today, triggering panic among local residents.
A senior official at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport confirmed the incident but said no immediate details were available regarding the cause of the crash or possible casualties. “We are still gathering information,” the official said.
According to witnesses, the aircraft plummeted into the Milestone College compound in Diabari shortly after midday. A student of the institution, who had left the campus shortly before the crash, said, “We saw smoke rising from the college area, and people started running in fear.”
Emergency services, including fire brigade units, police, and military personnel, rushed to the scene and launched a search and rescue operation. The entire area was cordoned off to ensure public safety.
Local residents reported hearing a loud explosion followed by heavy smoke in the sky before spotting the debris of the aircraft within the college premises.
Authorities have yet to confirm whether the pilot managed to eject before the crash. Bangladesh Air Force officials are expected to release a statement after preliminary assessments.
While the extent of damage inside the college compound remains unclear, no injuries among students or staff have been reported as the institution was largely vacated at the time of the crash, sources said.
The F-7 is a Chinese-built fighter aircraft used primarily for training and air defence purposes by the Bangladesh Air Force. In recent years, multiple incidents involving ageing F-7 aircraft have raised concerns over their operational safety.
Rescue teams are continuing efforts to secure the crash site, recover debris, and locate the pilot. An investigation will be launched to determine the exact cause of the crash.
More details will follow as the situation develops.
