A 17-year-old youth went missing after a head-on collision between a ferry and a passenger trawler in Rupsha River of Khulna on Thursday night.

The accident occurred around 10:30 pm between Jailkhana and Senerbazar ferry ghats, police said.

The missing youth was identified as Akash, son of Dilip Sarker of Sahapara village under Aichgati Union in Rupsha upazila.

According to police, the passenger trawler was heading towards Senerbazar from Jailkhana ghat when it collided with a ferry mid-river.

Two passengers fell into the water after the impact. Though locals managed to rescue one Akash still remained missing.

Following initial rescue efforts by locals, Khulna Sadar River Police, Rupsha River Police, Fire Service personnel, and Navy divers joined the search operation.

Shimul Ghosh, sub-inspector of Rupsha River Police outpost, said part of the trawler became trapped beneath the ferry during the collision, causing several passengers to fall into the river while others managed to climb onto the ferry, reported UNB.

“We are continuing the search operation to find Akash,” he said.
