New city corporation status and five new upazilas were approved at a meeting of the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganisation (NICAR), chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The meeting was held at the Bangladesh Secretariat on 7 May 2026.

The government on Thursday approved the formation of Bogura City Corporation along with the creation of five new upazilas in different parts of the country.

The decision was taken at the 120th meeting of the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganisation held at the Secretariat, chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

The newly approved upazilas include Mokamtola, formed by dividing Shibganj Upazila; Matamuhuri, created from Chakaria Upazila; and Ruhia and Bhully, both formed by splitting Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila.

Another new upazila, Chandraganj, was created by dividing Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila.

During the meeting, the Local Government Division placed separate proposals regarding the establishment of the new city corporation and the administrative restructuring for the upazilas.

With the inclusion of Bogura City Corporation, the total number of city corporations in Bangladesh will increase from 12 to 13. The number of upazilas across the country will also rise from 495 to 500 following the latest approval.
