The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has exempted Metro Rail from value-added tax (VAT) for one year to make it more popular.
In a special order on May 21, NBR exempted the value added tax. This information was revealed by NBR sources on Tuesday (May 23).
NBR said that Metrorail will be Bangladesh's first ultramodern public transport and will play an important role in alleviating traffic congestion in Dhaka. In order to promote this mode of public transport, it is essential to reduce the financial burden on passengers.
For this, the NBR has exempted metro rail services from VAT till June 30 of next year, under the powers provided in sub-section (3) of section 126 of the Value Added Tax and Supplementary Duties Act, 2012 (Act No. 47 of 2012).
The order has been implemented since December 28, 2022.
