UGC Secretary Dr Ferdous Zaman confirmed this to Dhaka Tribune on Wednesday.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) formed a fact-finding committee to investigate the rape incident that took place inside Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Saturday night.

UGC Secretary Dr Ferdous Zaman confirmed this to Dhaka Tribune on Wednesday.

“The probe committee will investigate the reason and the responsible body behind this rape incident inside Jahangirnagar University. They will also investigate the responsibility of the university administration in this incident and whether they have taken the necessary initiative or not,” he said.

UGC Public University Management Department Director Md Jaminur Rahman has been made the convenor and Deputy Director Mauli Azad as the member of the committee.

Mustafizur Rahman, a student of the 45th batch of the International Relations Department of the university, and a man named Mamun, 45, have been accused of raping a woman after locking her husband at the university’s Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall.

The woman was violated in the adjacent area of the hall at around 9pm on Saturday.

A case has been filed in this regard in the Ashulia police station.

Police detained four people, including Mustafizur, over the incident. An outsider named Mamun, the main accused in the rape, is yet to be arrested.
