Speakers at a discussion meeting on Saturday called for finalising the July 2024 declaration embodying the ideals independence, sovereignty, democracy, rule of law, independence of the judiciary, human rights, liberty and a society free from discrimination that it cherished.
The discussion meeting organised by Nexus Defence and Justice, and participated in by some organisers of the july movement was marked by sentiments running high for immediate codification of principles the movement upheld to create a sovereign, democratic, self-reliant and discrimination-free Bangladesh.
Prof. Md Shahiduzzaman, of Dhaka University International Relations Department, was the chief guest at the function presided over by Brig Gen Hasan Nasir, president, Nexus Defence and Justice.
The discussion meeting was addressed among others by BNP leader Habibur Rahman Habib, editor of GreenWatch Dhaka Mostafa Kamal Majumder, president, Dhaka Union of Journalists, Shahidul Islam, Col Hasinur Rahman Bir Pratik (retd), Shafiq Islam Hadi, president Inquilab Manch, Adv Ali Nasir Khan of NCP, Dr. Ferdous Ara Khanom, Bin Yamin of Chhatra Odhikar Parishad, Razaul Karim Rony of Islami Chhatre Shibir, editor, Jabani, Shah Md Mahfuzul Huq lawyer and organiser of the July movement, Dr. Latiat Ullah, former student leader, AM Mohid, adviser to BNP chairperson, Ashrafuddin Mahadi of National Citizen Party.
Prof Shahiduzzaman said that Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammd Yunus is increasingly showing interests in the election lobby instead of putting all efforts of complete reforms and trial of people responsible for July mass killings just for the sake of safegurding hold on power.
He said that certain quarters were showing a tendency to compare the sacrificed made in the1971 War of Independence with the July supreme sacrifices with an ulterior motive of devaluing the mass uprising. Politicians in their struggle to.win votes might forget the ideals of the July movement and once again endanger the country's security and sovereignty.
