Renowned poet Sheikh Rezauddin Ahmed, popularly known as Rezauddin Stalin, has been appointed as the new Director General (DG) of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, the country’s premier cultural institution. He will serve a one-year term.

The Ministry of Public Administration issued a gazette notification on Sunday confirming the appointment. The notification, signed by Deputy Secretary Abu Saleh Mahfuzul Alam on behalf of the President, stated that Stalin’s appointment would take effect from the day he assumes office.

Conditions of appointment

The gazette clarified that Stalin must formally cut professional ties with any other institutions or organisations before taking charge. His detailed terms of service will be governed by an approved contractual agreement.

Just a week earlier, on 14 September, the Ministry of Cultural Affairs had temporarily assigned Additional Secretary (Administration) Abul Faiz Md Alauddin Khan as acting Director General of Shilpakala Academy. Stalin’s appointment brings a permanent replacement for the position.

About Rezauddin Stalin

Rezauddin Stalin, a prominent poet, writer and cultural activist, has long been recognised as a leading voice in contemporary Bangladeshi literature. Over his career, he has published numerous collections of poetry and prose, earning widespread acclaim for his literary contributions.

In addition to his work as a poet, Stalin has been active in cultural movements and organisations, advocating for the preservation and promotion of Bangladeshi art, literature, and heritage. His appointment is being seen as an effort to bring fresh vision and creativity to the country’s national cultural academy.

Role of Shilpakala Academy

Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, established in 1974, serves as the principal state-sponsored institution for the promotion of fine arts, theatre, music, and cultural activities across the country. The DG plays a pivotal role in shaping cultural policy, supporting artists, and expanding the academy’s reach at both national and international levels.

Cultural observers have expressed optimism that Stalin’s literary background and long-standing involvement in cultural affairs will help revitalise the academy and strengthen its role as the guardian of Bangladesh’s cultural identity.

Looking ahead

With his appointment, expectations are high that Stalin will prioritise supporting emerging artists, promoting cultural exchange, and expanding the academy’s role in safeguarding Bangladesh’s traditional heritage in an era of rapid globalisation.
