According to officials concerned, the five-year Barind Integrated Area
Development Project (phase-3) was implemented in all the 25 upazilas
under Rajshahi, Naogaon and Chapainawabganj districts.
The BMDA has also been implementing various need-oriented development
projects in almost all the 16 districts under Rajshahi and Rangpur
The aim of the projects is boosting agricultural production especially
rice through bringing the farming fields under irrigation side by side
with socio- economic development of the region.
The Tk 284.28-crore project is designed to bring additional 50,000
hectares under controlled and appropriate irrigation management system
through fresh installation of deep tube-wells (DTWs) along with their
proper utilization.
In addition to construction of electrical networks for the new DTWs,
the project has been ensuring supplementary irrigation to another
60,000 hectares by last June.
It has also created employment facility for the small and marginal
farmers, day labourers and women of the project area.
Engineer Jakir Hossain, executive director of BMDA, said the Barind
tract is the driest part of the country and characterised by high and
wavy topographical features, low river network, high summer
temperature and other unfavourable climatic condition for agriculture.
Terming the groundwater as the main source of irrigation, he said no
crops could be produced without irrigation in the dry area.
Only in the Barind area, around 2.3 lakh hectares remain beyond
irrigation facility and if the huge lands are brought under irrigation
nearly 16 lakh tonnes of additional food grain would be produced, he
Besides, he said the project constructed underground irrigation
channel for resisting any wastage of water along with raising and
planting of sapling of both forest and fruit tress and caring of those
round the year.
Jakir Hossain said the project contributes a lot to increase food
production side by side with creating self-employment opportunities
and accelerating economic growth in the area. –BSS, Rajshahi
