Bnp celebrates Zia’s 79th birth anniversary Monday

Bangladesh Nationalist Party will celebrate the 79th birth anniversary of Party’s Founder late President Ziaur Rahman Monday amid its countrywide blockade programme and with most of its leaders and activists either arrested or on the run.
Leaders and activists of the BNP and its front organisations will visit to the mazar of Ziaur Rahman and place wreath at his mazar in the morning. BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, who is confined at her Gulshan political office since January 3, this time, will not be able to visit the mazar of Ziaur Rahman and pay homage to her husband. Central leaders of the party will place wreath at the mazar, said a press release issued by the party. Leaders and activists of the BNP and its front organisations have been asked to present at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on the occasion.
Meanwhile, Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh (DAB) has taken detailed programme to mark the 79th birth anniversary of Ziaur Rahman, who had introduced the multiparty democracy in the country.
The programme includes distribution of warm clothes among cold-stricken people, organisation of free medical and blood donation camp and providing medicines in front of party office and releasing of posters.
The national and party flags will be flown atop all BNP offices at Party headquarters and elsewhere in the country.
Party sources said the BNP would hold a small-scale celebration this year in view of the present political situation, with a number of leaders either in jail or on the run to avoid potential police harassment.
On this day in 1936, Ziaur Rahman was born in a respected Muslim family at Bagbari under Gabtoli thana in Bogra district.
Zia had played an important role during the war of liberation in 1971 as a sector commander. He had been installed in power through a sepahi-janata revolution on November 7 in 1975.
Zia read out thedeclaration of the War of Liberation  hrough the Kalurghat Radio Station Rahman on March 27 in 1971.
He came into politics by founding Bangladesh Nationalist Party on September 1 in 1978. He was killed in an abortive coup in Chittagong on May 30, 1981. – Staff Reporter
