BGB seizes 1.90 lakh yaba tablets, arrests three in Naf River

The BGB also seized an engine-powered wooden boat allegedly used for transporting the drugs, according to a press release issued early today.

A joint team of Sabran and Shah Porir Dwip Border Outposts (BOPs) under Teknaf Battalion (2 BGB) conducted the operation based on intelligence that a large consignment of yaba would be brought into Bangladesh from Myanmar through the Naf River.

The BGB team took up strategic positions in the Naf River near Sabran around 3pm yesterday.

At about 4:30pm, the patrol team spotted an engine-powered wooden boat carrying several people crossing the river towards Bangladesh at high speed.

As the movement of the boat appeared suspicious, the BGB team signalled it to stop. However, the people on board ignored the signal and attempted to flee, prompting the patrol team to give chase.

At one stage, the smugglers threw a plastic sack from the boat into the river. The BGB team subsequently arrested three people and seized the boat.

The arrested persons were identified as Jamal Hossain, 38, son of late Kabir Ahmed of Kulalpara village; Md Emran, 25, son of Shah Alam of Noapara village; and Md Ismail, 24, son of Abul Hossain of the same village in Teknaf, the release said.

During preliminary interrogation, the detainees admitted that the sack thrown into the river contained yaba tablets, reports BSS.

Acting on the information, BGB teams from Sabran and Shah Porir Dwip BOPs conducted an extensive search in the river and recovered the floating sack from the Jaliapara area near Shah Porir Dwip.

A search of the sack led to the recovery of 190,000 yaba tablets.

The arrested persons, along with the seized yaba tablets, are being handed over to Teknaf Model Police Station for legal action, the BGB said.
