The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained five Bangladeshi nationals who had illegally crossed into India and were attempting to return home through the Beanibazar border in Sylhet on Thursday.

The detained individuals are: Ayesha Khatun, 37, wife of Mintu Sheikh from Kadmari village in Benapole, Jashore; Roksana Khatun, 40, wife of Lal Mia from the same area; Rumana, 21, wife of Badsha Sheikh from Brahmanbaria; Badsha Sheikh, 27; and their three-year-old son, Mahdi Islam.

According to a BGB press release, a patrol team apprehended the group near Barotal, close to border pillar no. 1359/5 in Beanibazar upazila along the Bangladesh-India border in the early hours of Thursday.

During questioning, the detainees revealed that they had crossed into India illegally on December 3 via the Bagara border in Cumilla, assisted by brokers. They were later caught by Indian police at a customs checkpoint in Tripura while traveling by bus to Guwahati. After being detained for two days, they attempted to return to Bangladesh.

The detained individuals were handed over to the local police, and a case was filed in connection with the incident, the BGB statement added.
