Bumper maize production in Panchagarh

Farmers of char areas along the river Karatoa in Sadar upazila and other parts of the district have harvested a bumper production of maize this year.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources, the price and demand of maize both are high in the season.Maize cultivation in char areas and some other places of the district are on the raise as most of the land in this region is sandy wher other usual crops do not grow well.  The farmers of the char areas have cultivated maize at low cost and at the same time the selling price of the crop is high.  A farmer can produce 15 to 20 mounds of maize on one bigha (33 decimal ) of land spending Taka 7,000 to Taka 8,000 and can sell the crop at Taka 16,000 to 18,000,the sources said.
Now maize is being sold at Taka 800 to Taka 900 per mound in local markets. Total 14,201 hectares have been brought under maize cultivation with the production target of 1,20,000 tonnes of maize, the sources added.The farmers of the district are also showing keen interest in low-cost maize cultivation as it requires less fertilizer and irrigation, said deputy director of DAE M Najrul Islam. -BSS, Panchagarh
