The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has introduced a new Spot Assessment program aimed at broadening the country’s tax base.

This initiative is designed to provide direct services to taxpayers with taxable income who are required to file returns. The program encourages new taxpayers to voluntarily pay income tax, according to a press release.

The Spot Assessment is already being implemented in various tax zones across the country, playing a significant role in raising tax awareness and fostering a culture of tax compliance among businesses, professionals, and the general public.

The program is currently being conducted at district and upazila levels. The NBR has called on business organizations, chambers of commerce, local administrations, and prominent citizens to support the initiative, stressing that the success of the program depends on the active participation of taxpayers.

This program, the NBR believes, will increase tax payment compliance and bolster the country’s infrastructure development, education, healthcare, and other essential services by ensuring necessary funding through improved tax collection.

At present, there are approximately 1.14 crore Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) holders in Bangladesh, with around 40 lakh people filing income tax returns.
