In Bangladesh 40 private universities are functioning without Vice Chancellors.

And the number of such universities is increasing every year, according to the University Grants Commission (UGC).

The UGC said that many private universities disregarded the government’s request  to appoint Vice Chancellors.

UGC feels helpless in the situation, said UGC officials.

A UGC report published on December 12, depicted the dismal picture of the private universities.

According to the report, out of the countries’ 109 private universities there are no Vice Chancellors in 40 and 21 of them are functioning without Vice Chancellors  for pretty long.

It says, no Vice Chancellor was appointed by a University after the resignation by the VC long ago.

UGC said that the trustees who want to exercise their authority were reluctant to appoint Vice Chancellors despite reminders.

Asked about the issue, UGC Director for private universities, Dr Omar Farooq said, that UGC repeatedly reminded the private universities to appoint Vice Chancellors.
