Glowing tributes were paid to Prof. Emajuddin Ahmed as speakers discussed his life and works at a memorial lecture organised by the Emajuddin Ahmed Research Centre at the National Press Club on Saturday.

Prof Md Abdul Hakim delibered the memorial lecture depicting the honesty and integrity of Prof Ahmed who had resigned as Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University when the then education minister SHK Sadek tried to get a work beyond his jurisdiction done under pressure.

The great educationist, political scientist and leader of social movement for democracy did not try to get a home in a posh area in the capital because he would have to conceal the ownership of a house in the Kataban area.

Prof Emajuddin Ahmed was a great soul and never remained silent when democracy was trampled or human rights were violated, no matter which party was in power. He forgave even his enemies who took him to the court.

Some speakers said Prof. Emajuddin Ahmed believed that learning was not an end in itself and tried to help apply the knowledge gained in the university to the benefit of the society and the country.

Presided over by Prof Abdul Latif Masum, former VC of Patuakhali University, the memorial lecture was also addressed by Prof Nazrul Islam, businessman Abul Kashem Haider, former secretary to the government, Motahar Hossain, former editor of The New Nation, Mostafa Kamal Majumder, university teachers Tarek Fazal, Azam Sawdagar, Kazi Mahbubur Rahman and Asaduzzaman among others.
