Legendary Actor Prabir Mitra Passes Away at 81

Prabir Mitra, the legendary actor famed as the "Nawab of the Silver Screen," has passed away at the age of 81. He died on Sunday night (January 5) while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka. The news of his death was confirmed by Misha Sawdagar, president of the Artists' Association.


Mitra had been battling severe health complications for several days and had been in the ICU. His condition worsened on Sunday, prompting doctors to move him to intensive care. "Prabir Mitra’s condition has deteriorated, and he was transferred to the ICU. We request everyone to pray for him," said Soni Rahman, an executive member of the Artists’ Association, speaking to RTV.

His son, Mithun Mitra, had shared an update on January 4, stating that Prabir Mitra had been in the hospital for over a week due to age-related health issues. He had been admitted on December 22 for oxygen deprivation and later moved between the ICU and a cabin. However, his condition continued to worsen, with ongoing blood loss and a decline in platelet count.

Prabir Mitra was born on August 18, 1943, in Chandina, Comilla. Growing up in Old Dhaka, he developed an early interest in theatre and earned fame for his role in Rabindranath Tagore’s play Dak Ghar during his school years.

In 1969, Mitra made his film debut in the late H. Akbar’s Jalchhobi, though the film was not released until January 1, 1971. Over the course of his career, Mitra evolved from a leading man to one of the most beloved character actors in Bengali cinema. His versatility allowed him to shine in a wide range of roles, from dramatic to comedic.

Mitra’s extensive filmography includes over 400 films, with notable performances in Titas Ekti Nadir Naam, Jibon Trishna, Seyana, Jaliat, Fariad, Rokto Shapoth, Charitrheen, Joy Porajoy, Angar, Mintu Amar Naam, Fakir Majnu Shah, Madhumita, Ashanto Dheu, and many others. He became a household name and remains an iconic figure in the history of Bengali cinema.

Prabir Mitra’s passing marks the end of an era in the industry, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations of actors and filmmakers. His contribution to the arts will forever be cherished by his fans and the broader cultural community.
