The overnight clash ensued between the 2 BNP factions over establishing supremacy
Chandpur, Sept 21 - Over 50 people were injured in a series of clashes between two factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Hajiganj upazila in Chandpur district till Saturday morning.
Witnesses said the clashes broke out between the supporters of Engineer Mominul Haque, former president of Chandpur BNP and a member of BNP’s central executive committee, on Friday evening over establishing supremacy and continued overnight in Toragar and Mokimabad Sardar Bari.
Those severely injured were transferred from Hajiganj Health Complex to hospitals in Cumilla and Dhaka.
During the clash, both factions attacked each other using local weapons, leading to vandalism and arson.
Rumors spread about the deaths of 2-3 people, but police have yet to confirm any fatalities.
Hajiganj police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Mohiuddin Farooq said, the situation was brought under control after the arrival of the army and police late at night.
Joint forces are currently conducting operations to arrest those involved in the violence.
The deputy commissioner and police superintendent visited the site.
Additional police forces have been deployed to maintain law and order.-UNB
