In addition to the fatalities, at least 58 others sustained injuries, with the toll still considered preliminary as rescue operations continue. Of the reported deaths, 16 occurred in Al-Alaq, located west of Baalbek city.
These latest casualties bring the total death toll in Lebanon to over 1,700 since the outbreak of the Israel-Hezbollah war late last month, according to an AFP tally based on health ministry data. The actual figure is likely higher due to reporting gaps.
Baalbek governor Bachir Khodr condemned the strikes as the "most violent" the region has experienced since the conflict began. The Baalbek area, which borders Syria, is known for its poverty and has been heavily affected by the ongoing hostilities.
The strikes on Monday did not come with any evacuation warnings, and coincided with Israeli bombardments in southern Lebanon, including the coastal city of Tyre.
The Israel-Hezbollah conflict ignited on September 23 after nearly a year of escalating cross-border tensions. The war has displaced around 1.3 million people, with over 800,000 displaced within Lebanon, according to the UN migration agency. Additionally, more than half a million individuals have fled to Syria, primarily Syrians, as reported by Lebanese authorities.
