Iran has said that its president, the head of the judiciary and a senior jurist from the Guardian Council will jointly oversee the country’s transition period following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Under Iran’s constitution, the task of selecting a new supreme leader now falls to the Assembly of Leadership Experts, a council of clerics mandated to appoint Khamenei’s successor as quickly as possible.

However, bringing its members together may be challenging due to security concerns, as Iran remains under attack from the United States and Israel, reports BBC.

Khamenei himself assumed the role of supreme leader on the same day that Ruhollah Ayatollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic, died. - Agencies
