US President Donald Trump has said Washington could consider taking control of Iran’s oil resources, including the strategic Kharg Island, in remarks likely to further inflame tensions in the Middle East.

In an interview, Trump suggested that seizing Iranian oil assets remained one of the options under consideration as the conflict in the region continues to intensify.

He specifically referred to Kharg Island, a key Iranian oil export terminal, and indicated that the United States could potentially move to occupy it if necessary.

Trump also downplayed Iran’s ability to defend the island, saying it could be taken with relative ease if such a decision were made.

His comments come amid a growing US military build-up in the Middle East, where an additional 3,500 American troops have reportedly been deployed as fears mount over a wider regional escalation and possible Iranian retaliation.

At the same time, Trump said indirect contacts between Washington and Tehran were continuing through Pakistani intermediaries and claimed the discussions were making progress.

He suggested that an agreement could be reached relatively quickly, though he stopped short of saying whether a ceasefire or broader settlement was close.

The remarks are expected to add further pressure to an already volatile regional crisis, where military confrontation and diplomatic efforts are unfolding side by side.
