Travel Ban on Ex-Minister Mozammel and 3 Others Over Corruption

A Dhaka court today imposed a travel ban on former Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque and three others in connection with corruption charges filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The individuals subject to the travel embargo include former Additional Secretary Farid Aziz, former Commissioner of the Beanpole Customs House Mohammad Belal Hossain Chowdhury, and his wife, Hosna Ferdous Sumi.
The decision was made by Dhaka Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib after hearing three separate pleas from the ACC.
In its plea against Mozammel, the ACC stated that it is investigating allegations of the former minister receiving kickbacks from contractors, embezzling funds through various corrupt practices, laundering money abroad, and accumulating illegal wealth. The ACC further argued that Mozammel is attempting to flee the country to avoid facing justice.
The ACC’s plea against Mohammad Belal Hossain Chowdhury and his wife highlights accusations of illegal wealth accumulation worth hundreds of crores of taka. The commission alleges that the former customs commissioner and his family have acquired substantial properties both in Bangladesh and abroad, particularly in Canada, using proceeds from corruption. Additionally, the ACC claims that Chowdhury has significant investments in real estate, developer companies, and the stock market.
