Tipu murder case, four more on remand

A Dhaka court yesterday placed four persons including Awami League and Jatiya Party leaders on two days’ remand each in connection with the murders of Awami League leader Jahidul Islam Tipu and college student Samia Arfan Jamal Prity.

Earlier, at noon Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Mohammad Yeasin Shikder produced the accused people in the court seeking their remand. Considering the remand plea Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Asaduzzaman Noor passed the remand order.

These accused are- Awami League leader Mahbubur Rahman Titu, Jatiya Party leader Zuber Alam Khan Robin, and Arifur Rahman Sohel and Khairul Islam.

Detective Branch of police arrested the four accused on Saturday night in connection with the murders. They were arrested from different areas of the capital, said a DB official.

Their names came up during the interrogation of other accused arrested earlier, he said. With them, at least 18 persons have been arrested in the double murder case so far.

On March 24 this year, Tipu (55), former General Secretary of Motijheel Awami League, was returning home in his microbus from his restaurant in Motijheel AGB Colony area. The vehicle was at a traffic light in Shahjahanpur when attackers arrived at the scene on a motorcycle and opened fire.

College student Prity (22), who happened to be in a rickshaw next to the vehicle, was shot. The two were declared dead after being taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. - Special Correspondent
