The Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court of Dhaka on Wednesday granted bail to Prothom Alo Editor and Publisher Matiur Rahman till August 16 in a case filed against him under the Digital Security Act (DSA).
Judge Md Asaduzzaman of the court issued the order after Matiur Rahman’s lawyer submitted a bail petition in the court.
The court also fixed August 16 for full hearing on the bail petition with lower court record of the case to decide whether Matiur Rahman would be given permanent bail or not.
Metropolitan Additional Public Prosecutor Tapash Kumar Pal confirmed the news.
On April 2, a High Court Division of the Supreme Court granted a six-week anticipatory bail to Matiur Rahman in the case.
On March 29, a lawyer named Abdul Malek alias Mashiur Malek filed the case against Matiur Rahman with Ramna Model Police Station in the capital.
Prothom Alo reporter Samsuzzaman Shams, an unnamed assistant cameraman and unnamed others were also made accused in the case.
Malek accused them of using print, online, and electronic media to tarnish the image and reputation of the state, according to the First Information Report (FIR) of the case.
The FIR also says that the accused spread falsehood on the purpose to deteriorate law and order situation of the country. - Special Correspondent
