Man to die for killing wife in Mirpur

 A court here Wednesday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in Mirpur of the capital in 2013.

 The court also fined convict Manik Mia Bepari Taka 5,000.

 Judge M Akhtaruzzaman of Dhaka's Special Judge Court-2 handed down the verdict this afternoon.

 As the accused was absconding at the time of the verdict, the court also issued an arrest warrant against him.

 According to prosecution, the convict used to mentally and physically torture the victim over family matters.

 On January 12, 2013, the convict called the victim's mother and told her that the victim had left the house and switched off his phone.

 On January 17, Mirpur police went to the convict's house after receiving a phone call from their neighbors about a foul smell and found the victim's decapitated body.

 On the same day, the victim's father Matiar Rahman filed a case with Mirpur police station.

 The investigating officer of the case, SI Mohammad Salim of Mirpur police station filed a charge sheet against the accused in the court on April 5. Then on April 20, the same court framed charges against him.

 During the trial, 17 out of 18 witnesses testified before the court.
